Now that my preliminary exams are over, all I want to do is tromp around in the woods and watch insects. This is the worst season for such enthusiasm. Most things tiny and interesting are also sleepy and slow. Here are some I ran into this week in the field (well, first, one found shopping):
1. Insects that don’t need cover: legos! The lego store in Raleigh has insect kits for sale. Every kid I know is getting one for Christmas.
2. Giant aphids with their eggs- These are the biggest aphids in North America. Not the most desirable title, but they are cute in a spidery kinda way. They overwinter as eggs on tree bark.
